MY WHELPING INFORMATION:

Cresteds can whelp as much as one week early, so one week before the due date, take her to the vet for an X-ray, so you will know how many pups to expect. Also start taking her temp AM and PM. normal temp is 101 When her temp goes to 99 or below, she is going to have pups with in 12 hours.

She will probably want to have them where she normally sleeps. if that is in your bed, then that is where she will want to be. So you put a plastic cover on the bed and put washable towels over it.

She will shiver, shake, pant, pace all at the same time for several hours. that is all normal. Making them shiver and pant at the same time, is the bodies way of creating the process of moving the pups.

Let her move around as much as she wants. the more active she is the faster the pups will move into line. She may ask to go out side often. Put her on leash and take her out. On leash even in a fenced yard as they may dive under a plant or house and not come out. Take a towel out with you as sometimes the first time mothers think they have to poop when actually it is a pup. Many of the first born pups are born outside in my hands.

Where ever the first born is delivered, DO NOT pull it from the mother while the placenta is still inside her. One of you hold the mothers head so she can not grab the pup from you. The other quickly uses the towel to break the sack from the pups face and vigorously wipe its face clean and start on the body. You want to see it turn pink and start to cry. I even pinch their skin to make them cry, as you want air into their lungs.

All the time you are doing this you are trying to work close to her rear and not put any pull on the umbilical cord on the pups stomach or you will cause a hernia. That is why I do not let the mothers clean the pups as they will squirm around pulling at the umbilical cord and damage the pup.

While your cleaning the pup, with your third :-)) hand, you firmly pull the placenta out when the mother has a contraction. Now lift the pup and placenta away from the mother so that you can tie a cord around the umbilical cord about 1/4 to 1/2 " from the belly. Use a thick soft cord like yarn, NOT a thin cord like dental floss or embroidery thread which will slice the cord and cause great bleeding. IT IS WISE TO KEEP A CONTAINER OF BLOOD STOP HANDY IN CASE THE CORD WANTS TO BLEED. TIE MORE STRING IF IT DOES.

Now put the pup on to nurse. The quicker you get them to a nipple the better they are willing to nurse. Let the mother lick it. She may be rougher than you like, but it is finally HER pup!!

I do let the mothers eat two or three placentas as they say they are rich in the hormones that cause their milk to flow. If they eat more than 3, it can make them vomit.

Write down the time the pup was born. Normally you will get a second pup from 5 to 45 min later. After two pups, then there may be a gap of up to two hours before the third pup. After two hours you begin to get concerned. If you know there are more pups, you can call the vet for advise at that time.

Usually every 15 minutes I pick the mother dog up, gently press on her belly from side to side and lay her back down on the opposite side of her body. From one side to the other helps the pups move down the birth canal.

Part way through the process, I offer the mother milk laced with Gator Aide or Power Aide or ice cream, as they get thirsty and tired.

Fabulous information, Naixja. Thank you. We did lots of these things for the birth. Velcro dog didn't want to be away from me at all. She did throw up multiple times before birthing, and it's pretty clear she thought she wanted to defacate. Instead, out came pup. She seemed about as surprised as could be, but she immediately set to work, breaking the sac herself, and making sure the puppy cried. She is very protective of the pups. She was getting very agitated whenever the other dogs would even LOOK at the pups, so my wonderfully brilliant husband bought a child's play tent to put over the whelping box for her. She is VERY happy with this.

The vet check today showed them all to be doing well. We are all very relieved. She's doing a lot of sleeping today, as are we :-)

I am so glad the birthing went fine. It looks likes you guys did great. I found some really great puppy care information for the care of older puppies you might find helpful. I believe it is for puppies at least eight weeks old. The puppies may be a little young for this puppy care information but it may come in handy when they get a bit older. A Toy puppy is an extremely fragile breed. Additional care will be needed to insure the health and well being of the puppy. Without proper care this breed can suffer from Hypoglycemia, dehydration, etc.

Feeding instructions. The puppy is eating: EUKANUBA - SMALL BITE PUPPY FORMULA DRY FOOD PEDIGREE PUPPY CANNED FOOD AND COTTAGE CHEESE

Instructions: Mix both dry and moist food and add one tablespoon of Cottage cheese. In about 90 days start feeding dry food only.

Make sure puppy has food and water all of the time close to him/her.

Nutrical:It's a tube that looks like toothpaste. Give twice a day after meals, or in between meals. Finger nail portion only. (This is just for extra calories). Please don't give too much, it can make then sick.

Medication: We often send medication with puppies as a preventative. Give as directed:

PLEASE make sure that the puppy gets rest. Don't let him/her play too long for the first two weeks. Let them play for 15 minutes and then carry them or put them to sleep. Minimize their activity level so their blood sugar levels do not drop. Leave them alone so they can eat. If puppy ever looks lethargic, give 3 teaspoonfuls of honey or maple syrup and call me immediately 1-954-885-6600

Wizard of Claws recommends that Buyer DOES NOT depart from this routine for at least one week from purchase.

Puppies are easily stressed by excessive holding. Buyer should limit holding the puppy to 15 minutes per hour.

Keep puppy in a clean, dry, and warm place to sleep. Provide a heating pad, but keep the cord away from the puppy.

You should have the following in your home at all times in case of an emergency.

1) Pedialyte ( clear) 2) Nutrical 3) Chicken or Turkey and Rice Baby Food 4) Syringe 12 cc 5) Karo Syrup

If for any reason your puppy looks lethargic please do the following. a) Give your puppy two tablespoon of Karo Syrup and ten minutes after give 12 cc of baby food. Then 20 minutes later give 12 cc of baby food again. Try to have the puppy drink some water or Pedialyte. Call us immediately. b ) Then continue every 4 hours, (even at night) to feed 24cc of baby food and nutrical after.

EARLY A.M. FEEDING:

8 A.M. FEEDING

NOON FEEDING

HAVE ON HAND PEDIALITE OR GATOR AIDE (SECOND CHOICE). THESE FOODS PUT BACK ELECTROLYTES. NUTRICAL OR KAYRO SYRUP FOR LOW BLOOD SUGAR TO BE GIVEN 2 -3 TIMES DAILY. FEED THEM GERBER OR BEECHNUT BABY FOOD (CHICKEN OR TURKEY & RICE) OR LAMB AND RICE IF THE DOG IS NOT EATING. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A 12 CC SYRINGE FOR MOUTH FEEDING IF NOT EATING ON THEIR OWN.

OTHER POINTS

PLAYTIME

MUST BE KEPT TO A MINIMUM OF 15 MINUTES PER EACH HOUR UNTIL PUPPY SETTLES IN TO YOUR SURROUNDINGS.

BATH TIME

IF IT IS COLD OUTSIDE YOU MUST USE DRY SHAMPOO OR PUPPY BATH WIPES. IF YOU MUST BATHE THE PUPPY YOU MUST BLOW DRY HIM/HER WITH A BLOW DRYER.

PAMPERING YOUR PUPPY

YOU SHOULD BRUSH YOUR PUPPY TWO TO THREE TIMES DAILY. USING A COLOGNE ON YOUR PUPPY WILL INSURE GOOD GROOMING SCENTS AND IT IS BEST TO USE AN ALOE VERA OR OATMEAL BASED SHAMPOO.
